I'd been wondering about that for this Olympics, actually, given how bad the Beijing air is said to be. I know from running in London--whose air, while bad, is presumably nothing like Beijing--that it makes a real difference; hell, there are days in Chicago in August when I can feel the low air quality sapping my strength.
A mask would sure take some getting used to, though.
