Ah, that was so nice. A beautiful day today (unlike yesterday, which went up to the 80s with a humid overcast feel): low 70s, very sunny but breezy and clear. 1hr as 2:1.

Riverside Park run!

I did run Wednesday in Paris but must not have logged it: very nice final Parc Montsouris run, 1hr as 20 1:1, 20 4:1, 20 1:1. Yesterday was travel day, taxi pickup just before 7am - I was home by mid-afternoon (it is the nature of the time difference) but it was surplus to requirements to try and run, I had a lot of other bits and bobs to pick back up!

This morning, a very nice easy 30 as 1:1 in Riverside Park. Jet lag works favorably for me in this direction, it is no longer what anybody would call EARLY but I like it when I can run during the off-leash dog hours!

Monday, Tuesday

Mon.: 30 as 1:1
Tues: 30 as 2:1; 1pm hot hatha 60 (this is pretty much ideal routine IMO)

Sunday, April 8, 2018

Just a short one, 30 as 2:1. Back was very sore later on yesterday - I need to get to doc and physio and get this stuff sorted out...

Saturday, April 7, 2018

I am woefully imbalanced - however it was nice otherwise. 60 as 3:1 only I walked the long hill the second time round, just couldn't motivated to shuffle at higher effort and more right-side discomfort when I could walk it!

Friday, April 6, 2018

Good day!

Sunny, warming up - had a flurry of activity yesterday and got various Ottawa arrangements made, and I am feeling very cheery at the thought of seeing Brent a week from Sunday (albeit under initially trying conditions before we beat our retreat to Cayman!).

Morning: beautiful park jog, 40 as 2:1
1pm: my favorite hot hatha 60 with Dominique

Not sure how many (if any) classes I'll now get to before I leave next Thursday, but I did get a chance today to tell him how much I have liked his classes & that a return is probable (arghhh, this news is still embargoed, I have been sitting on it for a month now, let them announce it soon!)

Yoga, run!

Hahahaha, 1pm yoga was a DISASTER - it was the same teacher who had laryngitis earlier in the term and spoke in an incomprehensible whisper - voice back to normal levels, but still fast and breathy in a way that makes it impossible for me to understand! Add that to the fact that there are a couple things I genuinely can't do (right now/ever - standing splits for instance...), and it was not fun, though the heat and the stretch are no doubt worthwhile regardless. (I hasten to add that she is very nice, I just can't understand most of what she's saying!)

End of day: 30 as 1:1.

I think tomorrow I'm back on "run soon after I get up, eat smallish breakfast, digestive interval, 1pm yoga" though it depends partly on when I get to sleep tonight.

Wednesday, April 4, 2018

Moving incredibly slowly at a gait that can only be called "hobble," but it is such a beautiful day to be outside! I thoroughly enjoyed that. 1hr (20 as 1:1, 15 as 6:1.5, 25 as 1:1).

Yoga, run

That worked pretty well. My sleep-wake schedule is sliding later and later, ugh, but I'm so close to done here (and it works with my commitments in any case) that it seems silly to try and correct it. Got up just before 10, had breakfast and did a couple hours of very focused work, went to 1pm hot hatha 60-minute class with my fave teacher. This was really good - 60 > 90 from POV of heat stress/dehydration but also of back issues. Came home, ate lunch, huddled and was sleepy and unproductive, had to drag myself out of bed and into running clothes for late-afternoon 30 as 1:1 - but in fact it w as glorious, it started POURING just as I was getting started and the rain made me exuberant and awake...

1hr hot hatha
30 jog as 1:1

Monday, April 2, 2018

30 easy as 1:1. Now slightly frenzied as seminar is meeting at my apartment today - tidying is in order, but I also need to go and get food for lunch for all (6 students + me), complicated by the fact that most things are closed for the Easter holiday (same reason we're meeting at Impasse du Rouet - Reid Hall is closed).

Sunday, April 1, 2018

Sunday run

Very pleasant, Easter is a big deal here, lots of smiles on lots of faces! 1hr as mostly 2:1 but 1:1 on the 2 long park uphills.

Saturday, March 31, 2018

Fri: 40 as 2:1. Sat: 90 alternating 8 as 3:1 and 8 as 1:1. Not very fun but it is done! Gotta find some way to fix this cluster of pesky injuries.

Thursday, March 29, 2018

Thursday run/yoga

Morning: 1hr (a few mins short) as 20 1:1, 20 4:1, 20 1:1.
Evening: FINALLY back at yoga! 90 min hot yin yang. Gosh it is hot and gosh I am not flexible! But happy to be back at it. That was 2 weeks since my last class (I would normally have been back on Tuesday this week but it was P's birthday party in the evening) - noticeable fact is that once it's not a habit, a mild aversion/phobia starts to develop, it takes more and more effort to overcome - this is the reason it is good I run every day....

Wednesday, March 28, 2018

Just did 30 as 2:1. Will do longer one tomorrow on non-teaching day.

Tuesday, March 27, 2018

Ugh, out of sorts today - was tired yesterday and then couldn't sleep till FOREVER, did finally get to sleep but felt awful when I got up and basically went back to bed in a big way. Feeling immature and annoyed with myself for not doing a better job staying on top of pretty basic life stuff! Anyway, 40 as 2:1, MUST prioritize getting some improvement on this hamstring/hip/back stuff when I am back in NYC (also MUST lose weight, ugh, my least favorite and most impossible task)...

Monday, March 26, 2018

Back at it!

Did do 30 as 2:1 last Wednesday before leaving for my trip. No running while I was away but much more general activity than usual (Thursday: Albi, lots of clambering up ramparts; Friday: Toulouse, lots of city exploration; Saturday: trail walk with pup!). Today, end of day 30 as 1:1 (it was a scramble to get ready to teach after having been away).

Tuesday, March 20, 2018

Mon.: 30 as 1:1
Tues.: 40 as 2:1

Didn't flake on yoga goal, but felt that I needed to give problem areas some rest - inflammation....

Sunday, March 18, 2018

Not sure what happened to good reporting practices! Did my run all three days Fri-Sat-Sun, Sat was arduous due to more than usually knotted-up glute and heavy cold rain, have taken these days off from yoga as I think I overdid it slightly on Thursday...

Fri: 30 min easy/mod as 2:1
Sat: 90 min moderate as 2:1 and 4:1 alternating
Sun: 1 hour easy as 1:1 and 2:1

Thursday, March 15, 2018

Yoga! (?)

The exclamation point is insincere! It really was just too hot, I was done about an hour in and would have been much better off without the additional thirty minutes, which includes several things I can't really do and caused me several times just to flop to the mat in despair and overheating. I was tired beforehand and thought about not going, knew I'd have self-castigation, but it is possible that 7pm yoga is just undesirably late for me and that I should find another class to go to instead.

90 minutes overly warm hot yin yang!

Wed: 30 as 1:1; Thurs: 30 as 2:1.

Tuesday, March 13, 2018

It was a bit of a funny day, with needless anxiety worked up around various minor life tasks (figuring out how to wire money from my bank account, buying a stamp to mail a letter - the thought of the second was causing such stress that I blame it for the long afternoon nap!), but everything got resolved, I started the day with a nice run and ended it just now with a super yoga class. Feeling good about things.

1hr mix of 2:1 and 1:1 (latter on hills)
1.5hr hot hatha

Monday, March 12, 2018

Monday short and easy!

Because my seminar (the proper one - there's an associated research seminar on Wednesdays, but prep is less intensive) is Monday afternoon, I am usually spending Sunday evenings this semester finishing the readings, and then Monday morning frantically typing up notes for class. Put sitting at the computer for a couple hours together with run-run-yoga from weekend and it is a recipe for exceptional stiffness as I head out! Fortunately just needed to do 30 as 1:1 - was glad it was nothing more challenging....

Sunday, March 11, 2018

90 min hot ying yang. And yes, after 8 weeks of modest but consistent attendance (I missed the whole week that Brent was here, but every other week has been solid, including the week I was in Cayman), my mobility is definitely improved. I was defeated by a couple things near the end of class (by that point, too, I am in such a puddle of sweat that there is little incentive to try and focus and aspire to something impossible), but mostly I am doing much better! (The two things I can't do both involve holding big toe in fingers and then in one case extending the leg and getting it up behind your head and in the other, lying on your back, extending it to the ceiling and then lowering to the right - my body is not made to do this!)

My "15 classes before Toulouse" plan was probably unrealistic, the back situation means it is important not to overdo it, but I might try a few of these yin classes again this week on top of the ones I can definitely do - I think my French yoga comprehension is better enough now that it won't be as difficult as it was at the beginning of the semester! (To state the obvious, it is impossible to relax your head - the ongoing goal of 90% of yin postures - if you have to keep on popping it up to see what everyone else is doing and supplement incomprehension of what the teacher said!)

I didn't end up going to yoga yesterday, as the one on offer was the strenuous hot hatha 90 and I was aware that my back had already had enough of a workout for the day. That was definitely the right choice, back rather sore during wakeful spells overnight (huge rainstorm that left in its wake - SPRING!). The park today is bursting with joggers and families - pony rides on a Sunday!

1hr with mix of 2:1 and 1:1 (the latter mostly just on the long uphills)

Saturday, March 10, 2018

did it in local park rather than bothering with the bus: 80 mins alternating 10 as 4:1 and 10 as 2:1 (or as we prefer to say round here "2 x 2:1, 1 x 3:1"!). Must now get in shower, it's mild but rainy and I am going to be freezing after another minute of sitting in wet clothes!

Friday, March 9, 2018

Just 30 as 2:1. Nice mild morning. Having a lot of postnasal drip (and eyeballs were very sore and sensitive yesterday) - I think we are coming up on allergy season...

Thursday, March 8, 2018

am: 30 as 1:1 (pretty nice)
pm: 90 minutes hot yin-yang yoga (less intense series than the hot hatha 90, but intense regardless because of heat. I WAS A PUDDLE OF SWEAT!)

Wednesday, March 7, 2018

Wednesday run!

1hr alternating 2:1 and 3:1. In aftermath of yesterday's good yoga I can feel much tenderness along right side from spinal erector down to knee - not, I hasten to add, in the "it was broke already and I made it more broke" fashion, more just the way that when something hasn't been right for a long time and you work it gently but thoroughly, there will be some residue of soreness the next day. I need some more PT!

Tuesday, March 6, 2018

That was really good, I am glad I roused myself for it (was feeling distinctly inertial - on the couch about halfway through the long Convolute J on Baudelaire, really once I'm on a roll I'd rather read till I'm done!). Each teacher does a few slightly different tweaks, but I love the underlying sequence they've developed for this hot hatha 60/90 (today was 90 and it was pretty darn great!) - I have to see if I can get one of them to tell me the sources and rationale (it's not so much the sort of thing you can research online!)...

90 mins hot hatha

Mon.-Tues. catchup

Yesterday: 30 as 1:1 (teaching day is tiring and basically needs to only have easy short am run). Slept longer than I meant to but feeling very cheery this morning, a nice run (not as balmy as I thought it would be!), 40 as 2:1. Because I got up so late, I'll go to 5pm yoga rather than 1pm, that's good too...

Sunday, March 4, 2018

Sunday yoga

90 minutes hot yin yang, it was amazing! The sweat was pouring off me as if out of a jug, but it wasn't emotionally overwhelming like it was the other day. This might be my favorite teacher-class combo: the sequence they have put together is really, really good.

Sunday rainy run

Back to the winter weather I like so much here, 40F maybe and rainy and very mild. 1hr alternating 2:1 and 1:1 - that was good, I wasn't feeling full of vim as I set out but it's a nice easy way of getting in an hour of time on feet.

Saturday, March 3, 2018

Not sure why yesterday never got logged except that I was in a minor frenzy of work and other activity.

Friday: 30 as 1:1; 1hr of grotesquely over-hot and humid hot hatha that had me regretting the fact that I ever heard of hot yoga!

Saturday: 80 written as alternating 10 as 2:1, 10 as 4:1 - David writes these ones where the numbers aren't divisible to try and desensitize me to chaos! My brain wants to impose order, so: 4 x 20 as (2 x 2:1, 1 x 3:1, 2 x 4:1). Nice Luxembourg loops. Now freezing after waiting at bus stop to come home, and need proper food, but feeling good about getting that done. Back a bit sore but more I think as aftermath of working it in yoga, not the dreaded lower-back tight pain.

Thursday, March 1, 2018

100 times better than yesterday esp. due to setting out with thin enough socks that my toes weren't exploding with pain! (Really I am stiff and cumbersome right now, just shuffling along, but it's still pretty enjoyable, sore/stiff parts notwithstanding.) 1hr alternating 3 x 2:1 and 2 x 3:1. It's milder now and the yoga this morning was beneficial. I am visiting friends at the end of the month, leaving on the 25th, and I think it's time for a yoga challenge - don't think every day is realistic (I am every day for running and you can really only have one daily exercise commitment like that or it starts to be too much), but I think I can try and do fifteen classes before my trip - call this morning's 1/15.

That was really, really good. 10am Bikram, I would have sworn it was MUCH less hot than it should be but one of the other teachers said afterwards that really it's just that it was uncharacteristically low humidity. Anyway, whatever it was, I'll take it! Thinking about some sort of minor self-imposed yoga challenge, I really need it right now....

1.5hr hot yoga

Wednesday, February 28, 2018

I did do my 30 as 1:1 on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday were just a lot of FREEZINGLY COLD walking on our funny Disney excursion (short take: worthwhile, but w ould have been a lot more fun if it hadn't been so cold), one of those days was supposed to be a walk in any case and temps in low 20s really mean I can't jog outside. I was watching the thermometer keenly today, too cold earlier but I got home from teaching at about 4 and it was just about 30F, my tipping point, so I got out for the appointed 40 as 1:1. It was the least enjoyable "run" I have had for some time - overly thick socks meant toes were in agony, everything is stiff and achey, just wasn't feeling it! I feel distinctly better now I have eaten a sandwich; underfueling may have been an issue (it's not a time I usually run, and indeed timing now means that I will forego 7pm hot yoga, since I need to eat more food and it doesn't allow for sufficient digestive interval). Yoga tomorrow, though - I have really missed it!

Saturday, February 24, 2018

Fri, Sat

Fri: 30 as 1:1 before a day of museum-going. Sat: 40 as 2:1, off to lunch with friends shortly. Coach David has written me a very light schedule for this stretch of visitors, it is smart - definitely the way to keep consistency. I found myself thinking, "Oh, I'm not really time-constrained this morning, I should do a longer one," but really coach knows best, it goes better when I just follow his advice!

Thursday, February 22, 2018

Easy Thursday

30 as 1:1. It is so nice that Brent is here!

Wednesday, February 21, 2018

Early short/easy run

I was in the usual anxious twist around airport logistics, but it all worked really well in the end, Brent's flight was slightly delayed, I had time to do my run before I took the train to the airport, we had good rendezvous prearranged at the Starbucks next to arrivals so I could sit and r ead a book and eat breakfast rather than standing for an hour anxiously watching. Taxi home, then o ff to teach, and we are now winding down....

30 as 1:1

Tuesday, February 20, 2018

90 minutes hot hatha with this new teacher who I like. Getting both heat acclimation and modest yoga fitness - I am GROTESQUELY inflexible just now, but it is something to work on, and the hot session is no longer completely flattening me. Tricky to fit in the rest of the week but I will try and have at least one over the weekend, it is good for mental and physical health and mood!

Mon/Tues runs

Mon.: 20 as 1:1 (should have been 30, but I was pressed for time - assigned too much reading for class and was prepping up till the last minute!)

Tues: very nice more leisurely hour as 2:1.

Brent gets here tomorrow! Stripped-down run schedule while he's here (some friends are also in town, when it's just Brent he is kindly amenable to my introvert's needs but we will have some socializing to fit in!), then I think I have a good quiet run of disciplined weeks for first three weeks of March before some holiday days at end of the month visiting friends outside Toulouse...

Sunday, February 18, 2018

I did have a bout of jet lag-type intense sleepiness and napped for half an hour, but I'd set an alarm and truly did want to get to 3pm yoga, and I did, and it was GREAT! The usual teacher seems to be off this week but the one doing it instead was great too (some teachers speak French that is much much easier for me to understand than others, this was one of the clear ones!), and the room rather less warm than it usually is - I don't think it was just acclimation, maybe someone left a window open....

1.5hr hot yin yang yoga!

Saturday, February 17, 2018

Hmmm, must not have logged yesterday, but I did do the appointed 30 as 2:1. Have been in a frenzy of trying to get this talk written for today and battling jet lag (really I have almost a sleep disorder, and the travel in this direction is horrible for me - I can't fall asleep at night and then I can't resist the call of bed in the daytime). Will paste in the report from my training log:
Call it a draw, not an utter disaster - I couldn't make myself do it in the morning (tech. was up just about early enough, but feeling awful in every dimension of jet lag, sore back and hip [too much computer time Thurs and Fri] etc. and still needing to finish last touches on talk, plus ladyfication is necessary when delivering an academic talk, it's more time-consuming than regular getting-out the door). Slept for THREE hours after I got home (talk was fun tho!), the jet lag in this direction is very tough for me as I basically have what is almost a sleep disorder and cannot resist the call of bed in the daytime when I get that queasy-sleepy feeling. Woke up 5:30pm, still a bit of light, didn't let myself talk myself out of running and meant to do the whole hour - but was taken aback to get to park and find it of course locked, it's only open 8-5 at this time of year! ANYWAY I did 20 as 4:1 (to and from the park, basically), better than nothing, don't worry, I do feel guilty and I know this letting work stuff and bad sleep habits get the better of me is my longstanding vice!

Thursday, February 15, 2018

Tuesday: travel recovery! (Ugh, slept ALL day after I got home mid-morning, and still battling a bit of jet lag)
Wednesday: 30 as 2:1
Thursday: 60 alternating 3:1, 2:1 (the 7-times table!)

Got this talk to write for Saturday morning so everything is still feeling a bit frenetic, but I WILL go to Dominique's 7pm 90-minute hot yin-yang yoga this evening. Brent gets here on Wednesday next week, it doesn't affect running but we will have a few social engagements with friends and really I have to compromise on yoga, must make sure I get in a lot of classes between now and Tuesday!

Monday, February 12, 2018

Hot yoga!

Hahahaha, that was PERFECT. I took the license allowed to a runner who has been pretty consistent in recent weeks and decided that 6am hot yoga is the best thing to set me up for a very long day of travel (15 minutes walk each way). I brought my mat home yesterday after the workshop as I was so hammered I was not at all sure I would even be WALKING today let alone doing another yoga class in a warm room, but in fact it was good, my back was less sore than it has been over night (the hammering was more in the nature of heat stress I think than exercise as such), it tightened up a bit as I walked to class, but definitely a net gain from workshop overall. (And I REALLY noticed how much more mobility I had in hips for wind-removing pose, and that I could go back pretty far for camel - though that also has to do with the room not being so hot first thing in the morning!) It is a gift of course not to have had the heat get fully up to where it is supposed to be, AND the teacher was late, so we had more like a forty-five minute class, with only single repetitions of most of the mat postures. Anyway I felt good both during and after - it is my perennial wish that hot yoga should be about 5F degrees cooler....

30 minutes walk
45+ minutes hot yoga

Sunday, February 11, 2018

1hr early as alternating 3:1 and 2:1 (have always liked the seven times table), home to shower, Cafe del Sol with Brent and stayed for some Gibbon time (have been suffering slight self-inflicted Gibbon deprivation, didn't want it to go on another day), then Mark's insane "opening" workshop! It was what I most need, but it was way more intense than I had imagined (this was foolish, because although yoga workshops in general may involve a fair bit of sitting and learning things, Mark's regular classes are always extremely strenuous and sweaty, and so was this workshop - which also went on a half-hour longer than advertised!). It was very good, including 3 assistants to press down and offer alignment and other assistance, but VERY very very warm and effortful - I refilled my water bottle twice, and I still was absolutely tapped out of all fluids when I emerged. Much better now I have had a Gatorade, a .75l bottle of Pellegrino and 2 wonton soups....

Saturday, February 10, 2018

I am happy being a creature of habit. Reasonable early run (hamstrings v stiff, the left one loosens up as I warm up but the right side is basically just not good!), 60 as 2:1, then 10:15 hot yoga. That's the 75-minute class, I was nervous, but in fact it was OK - either it wasn't quite as hot as the hottest it ever gets or I have garnered a bit of heat acclimation by dint of non-Bikram hot yoga classes in Paris, probably a bit of both.

1hr jog as 2:1
1.25hr hot yoga

Friday, February 9, 2018

Just 30 as 1:1 easy and early, a good work session at Cafe del Sol (typed up reader report on book manuscript, which meant I could throw the pages away, significantly lightening my load for return travels), Keri's para-inspired flow yoga. Feeling rather sleepy now, must stay awake....

Thursday, February 8, 2018

Had thought I might try and stay for a second yoga class, but self-assessment following class #1 told me that further yoga was more likely to undo benefits than compound them! Home and showered, and rather tempted to go back to bed - huge anxiety spike yesterday evening concerning Brent's mother's health (not a true emergency, but the hospital didn't admit her and then she was stuck there in a snowstorm and transport issues assumed undue complexity - flurry of phone calls - seems everything was resolved OK in the end, but i t doesn't help one wind down towards sleep!)

42 as 2:1
1hr flow yoga

Wednesday, February 7, 2018

That's a long day of travels (I left my apartment in Paris around 7:30am and got to Brent's shortly before 10pm Cayman time a.k.a. 4am Paris time - call it 20+ hours door to door), but it all went smoothly. VERY stiff today, my morning jog (30 as 2:1) was more of a hobble, but I did a lovely 8:45 flow yoga at Bliss that has significantly restored fluidity to muscles! Did a couple minor work tasks at the cafe afterwards, now I'm home and I'm feeling extremely sleepy, may need to stick to novel-reading rather than work this afternoon in the interest of staying awake....

Monday, February 5, 2018

Short one!

Just 20 as 1:1, the Monday routine. Nice brisk chilly morning! Unfortunately I'm behind on laundry and was wearing a pair of pants that are great for hot yoga but just don't want to stay up when I'm jogging - otherwise would have added on a bit of park time, but enough is enough!

Sunday, February 4, 2018

Sunday run

I was not enthused, took long nap yesterday afternoon that meant I then couldn't fall asleep till really late and slept restlessly, house cleaner coming at 10 which always throws me into a tizzy (I am experimenting today with just staying at home and working at the computer as I realized that the idea of my usual self-imposed cleaner exile was hugely stressing me out!), but it was nice once it was underway. Rather chilly morning, should have had gloves, back in old shoes which is better for the toes but worse for that stiff right lower calf. I am getting to know the familiar faces of runners at the Parc Montsouris!

1hr as mostly 2:1 with some 1:1 on the long hills

Saturday, February 3, 2018

Long run!

Woke up way earlier than I wanted, mused on Gibbon and got up and wrote some words and waited for the sun to come up so that I could head out for my run (parks only open at 8, sunrise is more like 8:30). DONE. Ah, I don't think these shoes are going to work, toes became increasingly painful IN SPITE of the slits I cut along the sides, stopped in desperation after about 40 minutes and took out the insoles and threw them in the trash, instant relief but only for a little while, quite sore again (though short of excruciating) by the final fifteen minutes. Will pursue getting a pair in the proper size!

90 as 3 x 30 as (1 x 4:1, 2 x 3:1, 3 x 2:1, 4 x 1:1)

Friday, February 2, 2018

Good day! Easy short run in the am (30 as 1:1), then a stretch of work (unfortunately "real" work caught up with me, I'll write if I can this afternoon but I needed fresh quality morning time for a long list of minor but essential tasks), then 1pm hot hatha 60 with Dominique, which I think is my favorite. Have just showered and now really need to eat some food, somehow it's almost 3pm!

Thursday, February 1, 2018

Hot flow!

Hahahaha, none of these classes is as easy as I would like! I may have to give in and go to an actual hot 26.

(Hard to generalize, I haven't sampled widely enough, but I think that I prefer the vinyasa I to the hatha I in the non-hot room but that hot hatha is possibly preferable to hot flow. Really they are all good classes and good teachers - and I could understand this one again today pretty well....)

1hr hot flow

Up pretty early, out and back pretty reasonably early too, minor miracle! 1hr as alternating 2:1, 3:1 - hahahaha, I like my seven-times table, only problem is that SIXTY IS NOT DIVISIBLE BY SEVEN! My route (with 2 full loops + 2 pond add-ons) is only a scant 60, so I did not make it 63, but I will do exactly that next time David writes me this workout....

Wednesday, January 31, 2018

:35 as 1:1, breakfast and digestive interval, 12:30 hatha I in the non-heated room. It was a good class, though I found the teacher virtually incomprehensible (I would suddenly phase in and understand a sentence, and then it was gone again) - she spoke in a very hoarse near-whisper - I was slightly relieved to learn after class that it was because she has laryngitis! Good teacher regardless but it is more relaxing when I don't have to keep popping up my head to look at what the others are doing....

Tuesday, January 30, 2018

Early(ish) 1hr run (2:1). Breakfast, digestive interval, then 1pm 1hr hot hatha. Gosh it is hot! Makes even pretty easy things a lot harder than they would be otherwise - that said, even simple yoga isn't exactly easy, you should always be concentrating and working....

Monday, January 29, 2018

Monday run!

30 as 1:1, nice and easy for a teaching day. Gotta now get my notes typed up and assignments commented on before class!

NB not very impressed with my low yoga attendance these past two weeks (only two classes each week - I couldn't get myself back out the door yesterday evening), but daily run and good nutrition are the two important things, so I will endeavor not to be too self-critical about it! Will see if I can manage more like 3 or even 4 this week - I think it's possible. It's hard for me to go back out after dark especially if I ran properly in the morning - what really would work best would be if I could run a little earlier and then get to either 1pm or 5pm class. I prob just need to bite the bullet and go to whatever class is in the right time slot, even I think it is going to be too hard and/or too hot!

Sunday run!

1hr as 2:1. Back sore on hills! Very nice though - the weather here is just so perfect for running - high 40s and overcast but very mild...

Ladder run!

I think I will just paste in my training log entry: "Hahahaha, that was SO FUN! It is hard to explain why I like this kind of "ladder" workout so much except to say that it is like a corset for anxiety - not the uncomfortable kind of corset, more like the harness when you're ziplining, or that machine that Temple Grandin invented that compresses anxious cattle at the slaughtetrhouse! Have established bus route to Luxembourg Gardens (it is a very direct route, though I was freezing waiting at the stop to come home - but have high psychological toleration for cold, unlike heat which makes me frazzled!), took bus there, did my 90 as 30 warmup at 2:1 and then 2 sets of your funny ladder, WHICH I LOVE! It's flat there unlike my nearby park run, this is much easier on back (could feel tightness build to the end of the longer jog intervals, but otherwise fine). My right butt cheek is clearly suffering/benefiting from the stretch at yoga, at first it just felt tingly and then it increasingly felt like a block of wood! May try a few days of ibuprofen to see if I can quiet the inflammation, but I think it's part of the process of getting it back to normal functionality...."

David's funny ladder (it adds up to 30 minutes so it's really a fun one to have in the arsenal - it reminded me of a certain kind of swim workout; I miss swimming!):

1 x 4:1
2 x 3:1
3 x 2:1
4 x 1:1

1hr hot hatha. I am getting a BIT of heat acclimation at least! That was really nice....

Friday run!

That was super-nice. My kind of weather - it doesn't get old! :35 as 2:1.

Thursday run

I've got David to write the longer midweek run into Thursday rather than Wednesday because it's easier to do it not on a teaching day; that said, the essay I didn't get to work on yesterday (I ran instead, as I should!) took up the whole morning, and then I put the run off a little longer by dint of it being 2pm and deciding to eat lunch instead and then needing a digestive interval - yes, one of THOSE days! However I got out the door around 4 and it was surprisingly nice. I feel rather stiff and that R back/hip is really sore on hill intervals, but I enjoyed the whole thing....

1hr as 20 easy @ 1:1, 20 mod/hard @ 4:1, 20 easy @ 1:1

Easy Wednesday run

Just 35 as 1:1. Need to shower and get myself out of the house - undemanding but important session this afternoon getting library access for me and graduate students at the ENS library! Now that is a good thought....

Not very impressed by how few classes I got to last week, though I suppose if I am feeling kind I can put it down to ongoing adjustment issues esp. re: sleep! Hope this week will be better - really I need to write the actual specific classes into my appointment book, I think. This class was great, Vinyasa I, close equivalent of my Slow Flow class in Cayman - even simple easy yoga is hard if you haven't been doing it regularly of course! But it's nice not having the room heated!

Mysterious absence of posts for Sun. and Mon., I did run both days and logged in my training spreadsheet: Sunday was :50 as 2:1 (should have been an hour but I left it to the end of the day due to housecleaner timing issues, my morale wasn't high, it was pouring with rain and my back was sore), Monday was :20 as 1:1 (only short and easy on teaching days). Today was really nice, I have the day completely to myself to try and get this essay written, will go to yoga in the evening: :45 as 2:1.

Long run!

Found my route to Luxembourg Gardens on foot this time, though I got completely lost coming home and had to go to random Metro stop and take a couple trains home! This was much less of a slog than last week. (I'm still not happy with sleep schedule - I just don't feel sleepy at all, even at 2am, and accordingly have a very hard time dragging myself out of bed before about 10 - gonna make a concerted effort to get things a bit earlier.)

(Sore R hamstring and back starting to hurt on the longer jog intervals, work in progress.)

100 minutes: 5 x 20, odds 1:1, evens 4:1

Run-yoga combo!

Hmmm, not sure about that, it is efficient in certain respects (and I am looking forward to only having to take ONE shower today!) but I think having jogged first makes the hot even more hot! That said, it was a good class - the "hot hatha 60" with this good teacher I like - really I need to try all the different classes, I have yet to find one that I would call easy!

30 as 1:1, 1hr hot yoga

Hot yin-yang!

Hahaha, it's a REALLY good class but it's way too hot for me, I had to lie down for several stretches in the second half of class! I need to go more frequently so that I can beef up my acclimation. Think tomorrow I will shoot for a 60-minute hot class, 90 is brutal whatever you're doing....

Thursday run!

I've been blaming it on jet lag that I'm having such a struggle to get up in the morning (i.e. alarm set for 8:30, deep snoozing till 9:30, gradual surfacing and physical rising maybe 9:45 or 9:50) - that said, really I have a very similar struggle at home! Today was BLISS - mild rainy weather (52F!), did an hour in the park with varying intervals (2:1 as base, 1:1 on longer uphills and longer stretches of jogging on downhills once I was fully warmed up). BLISS, I say!

1hr misc.

Wednesday run!

Yesterday was a write-off - I should have made that dr. appointment for the morning, instead it was afternoon and I was sorta paralyzed with anxiety (irrationally) about logistics, also couldn't run beforehand as I wanted doc to hear lungs without effects of albuterol (which I use before exercise). ANYWAY it was all fine, doc rewrote my US prescriptions for here and listened to the lungs and deemed them fine, but by the time I got home I was just DONE - jet lag means I haven't been sleeping well at all, and at 4:30pm I changed into my nightgown and went to bed!

Feeling better today, research seminar meets in a couple hours and I need to sort out my thoughts on student proposals, shower & eat, etc. - it has also obvs been beyond me to get to yoga, but that will change either today or possibly tomorrow, fortunately!

Monday run!

30 as 1:1. Finally feeling comfortable enough with the route that I can start jogging almost right away (once I've crossed the big intersection near me and gotten onto the right street). Gray and a bit rainy, my kind of weather! I teach in two hours, better get in the shower and get my act together....

Hot yin yang!

Gosh, this class is so good - it is like a sort of deconstructed stripped-down version of a Bikram sequence, less strenuous but with deeper stretch and a somewhat different array of positions (but some of the same fundamentals). Still finding it very challenging, partly because I am so inflexible but also because hot room + still something not right with lungs leads to an unpleasant sort of pre-queasy feeling (it's like postnasal drip but in the lungs).

90 minutes hot yin yang yoga

Saturday long-ish run-ish, Sunday local jog

Must have forgot to write this up yesterday, but the report is in my training log: It was a real slog - these couple days of yoga have taken all the spring out of my legs while I get adjusted to new training stress, even from the start I was shuffling, and lungs are definitely not at 100% either. I did first 45 as 2:1 then switched to 1:1 for the remaining 45, including some stern words to myself re: keeping on for the last 20 minutes! (i.e. "It's 1:1, it's only SLIGHTLY harder than walking, you could walk forever, and the jog pacce at this point is a shuffle - you can totally do this without undue physical or psychological strain!") The Jardin du Luxembourg is gorgeous and definitely one of my good options for long runs, I went there and back on the metro.....

And today, a morning of sun! I had a terrible night of sleep, next-door neighbors were having a dance party that literally went on till after six in the morning, I think I finally fell asleep around 3:30 but it was still pretty loud and I was only lightly sleeping! No biggie however (they had put up a note in the elevator, it was a 25th birthday party, hopefully they won't have anything like that any time soon!). Walked over to Parc Montsouris and had a lovely sunny jog of 40 minutes as 1:1 (including most of the way home). Many joggers, many young children weaving on scooters and bicycles!

Friday, January 12, 2018

I took the metro, I think it was just that mild minor barrier to doing something new that had me trudging to and fro these last couple days, really the train is INCREDIBLY convenient and goes virtually door to door (the stops are close together, so while yoga and Reid Hall are close, the metro is such that there are even 2 distinct stops, making it ridiculously convenient). Non-heated class, mercifully, though it wasn't at all gentle in the manner I imagined it would be (or maybe I am just ridiculously inflexible right now). Harder to understand today's teacher, partly because it was more abstract and also because often we were flopped down in relaxation position and it's a lot harder to understand if you can't cross-checck with physical movements of teacher and other students! (Like, it's almost impossible to relax your head when what your head wants to do is pop up and look around to make sure you really understood the instructions!) But it is a very good studio in every respect, including the important one that the teachers are helpful and welcoming even if you are being a goofball - I am really glad I got back out for that, I knew I wanted it but it was hard to overcome that little fearful barrier of not wanting to leave the house in a new place.....

90+ minutes yin-yang yoga (non-heated)

Still sort of figuring out my routine, but that was nice (weather here is optimal Davidsonian running, high 40s and overcast!). Walked to parc, started jogging there and jogged home: 30 as 1:1. Rethinking logistics - it's so mild, and metro so convenient, I think that for longer runs I should be taking a train somewhere that gives me larger park and longer route....

30 as 1:1

Thursday, January 11, 2018

It was an amazing class, though 90 minutes of heat is really too much for me - it's not that the postures are strenuous per se but even just doing warrior 1 & 2 when it's that starts to feel more intense than I like! (Also still have too much phlegm in the lungs.) Hahahaha, I won't say I was out of my depth, I really liked it, but it was certainly not the class I imagined I was showing up for - nomenclature - "Hot Yin Yang" not at all the equivalent of the yin class I do in Cayman! That said, I followed the French pretty well (it's not like yoga teachers say completely random things, really you know what they're going to say next - it was a very good teacher BTW, nice purist style), and am really excited about having a spell of daily yoga. It's a longish walk so RT walk adds good low-level exercise to my day - I am serious about losing weight and getting into better shape (good nutrition trumps all of course).

c. 1hr walk
90 minutes of very warm yoga!

Unwanted week off plus Thursday back on track (Paris edition)

Gosh, what a week! At the end of last week, the weather in NYC got crazy (I took a hard spill on midtown flagstones Thursday morning, still rather bruised about the knees, feeling very lucky I wasn't actually hurt, just covered with snow and bruises!), we were interviewing job candidates at the mildly sordid Midtown Sheraton, I was still sick, it was exhausting, my Friday-night flight to Paris was canceled (this was a blessing in disguise, I couldn't get rebooked on a direct flight till Monday so I postponed first seminar meeting from Monday to Wednesday and had the whole weekend to try and get less sick, pack, return library books etc.). I really couldn't exercise over the weekend, the air was so cold outside and I was still feeling pretty ill and with dodgy lungs - it didn't make sense to make the effort to get to the track at Chelsea Piers when I was so much ailing. Got to Paris safely, jet lagged, taught seminar yesterday and finally today got up and got to make it my priority to find my default Paris run route!

Parc Montsouris is my obvious best option (it is a small park but there are quite a lot of other runners, evidently French and serious, which makes me feel that I am not missing out on something more immediately apparent - not so much the culture here to run on the sidewalks!). Walked there and back to orient myself, there via a longer direct route (close to 20 mins) and back via a slightly shorter also quite direct one from a different corner of the park, that will be my route to and from going forward as it is more residential and less commercial, i.e. fewer fragile old ladies with shopping carts/more appropriate to jog!

20 mins walk there, 35 mins of jog as 2:1 (rather hilly), 15 mins walk back, 1:10 total activity

(I should add - was on the mend, but lungs don't benefit from overnight air travel, and they are currently very wheezy and full of phlegm - I am a little bit worried that I may be asthmatically allergic to something in the apartment....)

Wednesday, January 3, 2018

I am feeling surprisingly competent albeit sick and a little overwhelmed. Got up early and combobulated myself, then took a taxi to Chelsea Piers, did my 30 as 2:1 on the track, dropped book and Xmas card belatedly for Josh, cleaned out locker (it expired early Dec. but I guess these nice commercial gyms give you more leeway than college ones would!) and took another taxi home. It is brutally cold outside and even breathing in the air is sending me into fits of coughing - I am at the raw-lungs-and-much-phlegm stage. Some errands to do at the office, then 2:30 meetup in midtown to start our interviewing. What I really feel like doing is going back to bed of course!

Tuesday, January 2, 2018

Just another short one, 25 as 2:1 - I think yesterday was lung nadir, but it's only a little better today, better to err on side of caution as the days between now and Saturday are going to be extremely taxing! So much so that I rather quail at the whole notion - need to get in the shower, get something to eat and start doing some planning/organizing for how I am going to make all these things happen....

Yin yoga!

Ah, finally - that was SO GOOD. It's more meditation than anything else, gotta get back at it (on which note I think I found which yoga studio I should go to in Paris - doesn't this look great? Formerly known as Bikram Yoga Rive Gauche, but they have renamed to reflect the fact that they offer a lot of different kinds of class. This is seriously optimal! I am so excited!

Sunday/Monday update

Sunday was just 20 as 1:1 (good choice after a night when I was coughing so much I had to move to spare BR for a bit), this morning (happy new year!) I had an hour on the schedule but lungs seem even more sharply painful than before, so I just did very gentle 25 minutes as 2:1. There is a yin yoga I can go to this morning - I have deemed myself still too ill to go to even flow yoga, but this is more after the fashion of a restorative class and I think it will be OK. Ugh, my lungs are definitely a weak link.....
