E and I have just started biking, and I think of you every time, as I leisurely pedal along the bikepath. Watching E almost bump into every pedestrian, tree and car she approaches, yet always manage to make it (OK, she has bumped into a few bushes, but never a person) seems like some kind of metaphor for anxiety and success, except in this case I have the anxiety and she has the success, whereas you combine them both in one person (I am talking not about miles or speed, but about not falling off cliffs). Truly, though, I had forgotten how completely nervewracking it is to ride with an eight year old, so I am trying to ride as much as possible, so she gets better and I can be less nervous--more of the metaphor! Unfortunately, it is raining again (and she is GONE till the end of the week at my sister's!).

Mmm, maybe that is a parallel, not a metaphor. I so wanted to say metonym, but it's obviously not that.

Ah, with later posts I put it together:
loop = 6mi
to-and-fro = 1mi + 1mi

20 mi = to + 3 loops + fro
